SECOND WEEK OF OCTOBER

SELF-CONTROL: The ability to control your actions and emotions on your own

Vs. Self-indulgence

FAMILY ACTIVITY:

  • Parents can talk to their children about: saving part of their allowance, how to use their time wisely, how to conserve energy, and why they should recycle.
  • Talk to your children about fear and ways to deal with and manage their fears.
  • Reward your children when they remain calm in aggravating situations. If they lose their cool, you will pay attention to them when you punish them so give them positive attention by rewarding them when they keep their cool. A few kind words or a hug goes a long way.

CLASS ACTIVITY:

  • Have students write and perform short skits about keeping one's "cool" in different situations.
  • During P.E. or recess games, discourage students from boasting when they succeed at a game.

HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITY:

  • Self-control is important in any profession. Using examples from current events and class work, discuss what the effects of different people losing control of themselves have been.

CREATING A POSITIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Just as it is important for students to remain calm, teachers must do so as well. Outbursts of anger are often self-defeating. They allow an unruly student to feel they have beaten the teacher and thus encourages his or her behavior as much as the punishment discourages it.

"The road to distinction must be paved with years of self-denial and hard work." -O.S. Marden
