FAMILY ACTIVITY:

  • Parents should teach their children how to act when they see people who are different from them in public. Help them to understand that it hurts the other person if they laugh, stare, or point.
  • It is understandable that children are curious about groups of people who look or behave differently than they. Help them to learn about other groups so they can understand why the differences exist and prevent the recognition of difference turning into hate and racism.
  • Set a good example for your children by not making fun of other people for their beliefs or their appearance. Your children will learn what is acceptable by watching you.

CLASS ACTIVITY:

  • Invite leaders of various ethnic and religious groups from the community to visit your class and talk about their beliefs and customs. Prepare your students before hand by giving them a basic overview of the group's beliefs and practices.
  • Read short stories from different cultures to your class and discuss the moral lessons involved to help them to learn that there is value in every culture.

HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITY:

  • Discuss the history of racism in America. Include discussion of both what happened and why it was allowed to continue. Discuss the continuing effects of past and present racism.
  • Discuss how essential political tolerance is for a democratic government to work.
  • Have students give short presentations on the most important advances in civil rights and their effects.
