SECOND WEEK OF JULY

CURIOSITY: Desire to explore new places, meet new people, and understand new ideas

Vs. Indifference

  • SUGGESTED READING:
    Curious George
Books about Columbus or another famous explorer
    Paddington at Large
  • SUGGESTED FILMS:
Any episode from James Burke's Connections
Connections 2 or The Day the Universe Changed

FAMILY ACTIVITY:

  • Take your child someplace they have never been before to give them a new experience. Encourage them to explore the place and ask questions about it.
  • Take your child to the Exploratorium or the Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.
  • Ask your children if there is something they want to know more about, help them to start some research.
  • Take your child to a museum or buy him/her a new book to expand their knowledge.

CLASS ACTIVITY:

  • Have your students read an article from National Geographic about a distant place or a culture your students are unfamiliar with. Have a class discussion about the article and encourage questions about how and why things are done differently in that culture.

HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITY:

  • Assign a research paper on different countries, regions, cultures, and religions of the world. Part of the project should be an oral report with a question and answer period.
  • Go to the library and tell your students to write 200 words on any topic they can find information on in the library.
  • Break the class into groups and give each group a riddle based on what they should have learned in class. The answers should be in essay form and explain the meaning of each part of the riddle. An example might be, "Why did Checker's owner have to quit?" The answer would be to explain that Nixon had a dog named Checkers and remind them of Nixon's historical resignation due to Watergate.

"It is a shameful thing to be weary of inquiry when what we search for is excellence." -Cicero

"The first and simplest emotion which we discover in the human mind, is curiosity." -Edmund Burke

"The important thing is not to stop questioning. Never lose a holy curiosity." -Albert Einstein
