POLITE: Showing good manners and having respect for the feelings and position of others

Vs. Being Disrespectful or mean spirited

  • SUGGESTED READING:

    Dinosaur Do's and Don'ts

FAMILY ACTIVITY:

  • Talk to your children about manners. Specifically, situations where it is appropriate to say "please", "thank you", "you're welcome" and "excuse me".
  • Require your children to say "please" and "thank you" when they ask you for things. When you want them to do something, remember to say "please" and to thank them when they do it.
  • Exhibit being polite when dealing with others.

CLASS ACTIVITY:

  • People sometimes use politeness as a cloak behind which to hide hateful behavior. How do we see through these deceptions?
  • Require your students to say "please" and "thank you" when asking for something in class.
  • Have students perform skits showing someone being rude and having to apologize.
  • Have students write thank-you notes to parents and other members of the community for time and materials they have donated during the year.

HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITY:

  • Why are people polite, that is, what benefit do people derive from politeness? Different people have different opinions about what is "polite." Why do these differences exist and how do people manage to be polite when we cannot agree on what polite is?

CREATING A POSITIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Set a good example for your students by greeting them when you see them and by always being polite.
