- SUGGESTED READING:
The Lion and the Mouse
The Little Prince
Annie and the Old One
- SUGGESTED FILM:
Forest Gump
FAMILY ACTIVITY:
- Have a contest to see who can be the most considerate each day.
- Take turns in allowing a different family member to decide which
television show the family will watch or which book the family will
share.
- Make it a family rule to always use "please,"
"thank you," and "you're welcome."
- Reward your children when they go out of their way to help another
member of the family.
CLASS ACTIVITY:
- Require students to show consideration for each other in class by
respecting each other's property and person.
- Rotate allowing students to check out play equipment, like jump
ropes and balls.
- During Physical Education give students a choice of activities
rather than just one.
- Require students to use "please," "thank you,"
and "your welcome" in class.
CREATING A POSITIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT:
- Just as students are required to be considerate of each other and
of the teacher so teachers should observe reciprocal rules. Always
phrase a request for a student to do a special task, such as taking
a note to the office, as a request and not as a command. It will
carry the same force, but by saying asking and thanking, you will
help to strengthen his or her self-esteem. Always remember that in a
positive environment students must be both safe and valued. If a
teacher engages in a personal attack against a student or another
teacher, the learning environment is destroyed.
"We must be as courteous to a man as we are to a picture,
which we are willing to give the advantage of a good light."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
"Nothing is ever lost by courtesy. It pleases him who gives
and him who receives, and thus, like mercy, it is twice blessed."
-Erastus Wiman
"Happiness goes a long ways lots of times when it ought to
stay at home." -Kin Hubbard
