FOURTH WEEK OF MARCH

READINESS: In condition for immediate action; prepared; mentally fit

Vs. Being Unprepared; not being ready

  • SUGGESTED READING:
    Leo the Late Bloomer
    James and the Giant Peach

FAMILY ACTIVITY:

  • Parents can prepare their children for school by: making sure they go to bed at an appropriate hour on school nights, providing them with nutritious meals--especially breakfast--and by telling their children how proud they are of them when they take on a challenge.
  • Talk to your children about their plans after they finish school. Help them to develop a realistic plan to achieve those goals and support them in carrying it out. Start talking about college at an early age to make sure your children really understand that if they want to go to college they can.
  • Talk to your children about drugs and sex at an early age so that they are prepared to resist peer pressure and are able to follow their own conscience.
  • Teach your children what to do if they are injured and how to get help quickly and safely.
  • Teach your children what to do it there is a fire or an earthquake. Have them develop different ways to get out of the house safely in an emergency and have them pick a designated place to meet near your home in the event of an emergency.

CLASS ACTIVITY:

  • Talk to your class about what to do in case of an emergency at school. Make sure they know how to react in case there is an earthquake, fire, or other emergency at school.

HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITY:

  • Discuss what students should do to get ready for going to college.
  • Discuss what students should do to get ready for entering the workplace.
  • Discuss what students should do to get ready to live independent of their parents. Have students prepare a budget for living on their own.

CREATING A POSITIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Take this opportunity to review the academic performance of your students to determine if they are on track to advance to the next grade level. If any students are not, arrange a meeting with the student's parents and agree on a strategy for how to proceed.
