FOURTH WEEK OF APRIL

LAW-ABIDING: Obeying the law; willingness to work through legal means to make change.

Vs. Breaking the law

  • SUGGESTED READING:
    Why Do We Have Rules?
    Manners to Grow On
    Abraham Lincoln

FAMILY ACTIVITY:

  • Parents should talk to children to help them to understand that laws are written to protect them. This understanding makes it more likely that a child will obey laws.
  • Parents should reward their children for obeying safety laws and punish them for disobeying them.
  • Parents must set a good example for their children by always obeying laws and rules. When a child sees a parent ignoring even minor laws the child learns that it is ok to break the law if it would make their life easier.

CLASS ACTIVITY:

  • Invite a law enforcement officer to speak to the class about the importance of obeying laws.
  • Make sure your students are aware of traffic safety laws that apply to them, and especially bicycle safely laws.
  • Discuss the process by which laws are made.

HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITY:

  • Discuss whether laws ought to be made to achieve a specific good, or whether they ought to be made on the basis of abstract principles. What is the basis on which laws are made in the United States?
  • Have your class petition the government to change or support a law that they feel strongly about. Allow each student to come to their own decision about which side to support.

"If one man can be allowed to determine for himself what is law, every man can. That means first chaos, then tyranny. Legal process is an essential part of the democratic process." - Justice Felix Frankfurter

"We cannot expect to breed respect for law and order among people who do not share the fruits of our freedom." -Vice President, Hubert H. Humphrey

"It is the spirit and not the form of law that keeps justice alive." -Chief Justice, Earl Warren

"You can't legislate intelligence and common sense into people." -Will Rogers
