SINCERITY: Eagerly doing what is right with transparent
motives
Vs. Hypocrisy
- SUGGESTED READINGS:
Charlotte's Web
Abraham Lincoln
Harquoon and the Sea of Stories
Books about Martin Luther King Jr.
FAMILY ACTIVITIES:
- One definition of a "gentleman" is a person who means
what they say and says what they mean. Teach your children not to be
afraid of saying the truth and expressing their honest opinions.
Also talk to them about respecting the right of other people to
disagree.
- When praising your children, praise them for both the action they
have done and the character trait that lead them to do that action
because their motivation is as important as the deed itself.
- Talk to your children about why they should do what is right. Help
them to understand that good character is more than just doing the
right thing, it is doing the right thing for the right reason.
CLASS ACTIVITIES:
- Have students write notes praising the character of another
student or of an adult at the school. The notes should be turned
into the teacher so they can be monitored to ensure that no student
writes inappropriate notes.
- Talk about why it is important to say what you mean and mean what
you say instead of just saying what is expected.
HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES:
- Discuss the importance of sincerity, why is it not enough to just
do what is right?
- Have students write a short paper about a literary or historical
character who exhibited sincerity. Perform a Random Act of Kindness
Each Day
